Shapes Unit
Students practice math vocabulary terms with a concentration game using flash cards. I provided popsicle sticks for students to explore the concept of regular polygons.
Dividing Decimals Unit
Students practice dividing decimals through multiple activities using play money.
Student Achievement Goals
I post the objectives of each math lesson on a wall in our classroom. Students are able to read them each day and see what knowledge they will gain over the course of a unit. At the end of each lesson students then mark on the Smart-Board their understanding of that lesson's objective. This allows me to modify my lessons based on student responses to each objective.
Math Word Wall
The Math Word Wall contained all of the vocabulary words students learned in each math unit. The word wall was referred to whenever a new term was introduced.
Mountain Math
Mountain Math is a 24 problem set review for students. It allows students to practice mathematical concepts learned in previous years and throughout their 5th grade math curriculum.
Data Analysis
Data Analysis was an activity acquired through my graduate course at Michigan State. Students were put into small groups and then asked several questions to all of the students in the class. Students then graphed their data into different representations: bar graph, line graph, circle graph, stem and leaf, pictograph, etc. At the end of the activity, students rotated around the room interpreting each graph.
